The spots are all fixed, the same size and flat so your camp can be placed consistently every time.

I have a trading post (for plans, weapons, armor, and ammo), a toy store, a bakery, and a small house for my character. We are close enough to each other and with the Wayward between our camps it does feel like a little town sprang.
