I would think a damp cloth/towel between the card and the iron would rejuvenate the cards and preserve the cloth between. I’ve worked in my college ID office, can confirm it uses heat. It’s because they laminate the cards. I remember that thing taking forever to heat up when it hadn’t printed anything in a while. You’d forget you were waiting for a Funny Cat And Gym Shirt. Must have used a heat printer. So the card it’s more heat resistant but the ink is fucked. That is the one I held in a wrong way, the other side is almost black. It’s my college ID card.

Not sure how it works in other places, but in Australia, we can take damaged notes/coins that would otherwise not be accepted to any bank and they will replace it with a new, fresh note.
