As an Orthopedic Surgeon, I will never ride an Awesome Motorcycle Best Pitbull Dad Ever Vintage Shirt motorcycle. I know Vascular Surgeons who wear compression stockings every day. The precipitating mental illness is often dismissed in acute care settings to make way for the physiological problem at hand. I think a lot of hospital clinicians open a patient chart, see PTSD, and think, “oh here we go, this one is going to be fun” instead of allowing their hearts to open the pain of that person’s story. While this may sometimes be true, neglecting to address the mental illnesses behind physical illnesses is such a missed opportunity— even if it just means saying to the patient, “I get the impression you’ve been through a lot in your life. If must be exhausting to have endured all that you’ve been through”.

I think the list of potential benefits is more significant than most people realize. I worked in two different hospitals that had great patient support from the social workers, chaplains, and ancillary teams. I completely agree with you. It should be supported more but because it’s not covered by insurance and is considered “non-essential” in penny-pinching hospitals I don’t see it being widely implemented, unfortunately. If you take an Awesome Motorcycle Best Pitbull Dad Ever Vintage Shirt steps back you could probably crunch the numbers to see that patients will have less extended lengths of stay, lower rates of delirium, etc. Overall it would cost the hospital a little less I think prospectively. I agree with you so much! I work at a hospital that has some of the amenities (because we obviously don’t call them essential services yet) you mentioned, and the joy it brings to patients is so palpable. We have inpatient hospice on my hospital unit as well, and those folks even get massages.
