I have a black friend who told me a story one time. His dad was a Horse Assuming I’m Just An Old Lady Was Your First Shirt pilot and like Most pilots, before the flight, he had the door open and would greet passengers. One time a nasty old lady saw him and very loudly said “uh, a black pilot? No way we are making it to …… (can’t remember destination)….”. I then said, “hah if I was that pilot I’d shake the plane a little bit to scare her”. His response was “no because then she would win my dad said he flew that flight perfect, zero turbulence, and made it a little early”. I think about that conversation often. His giving up would mean the racists win.

I don’t doubt this was long ago either. Even a Horse Assuming I’m Just An Old Lady Was Your First Shirt a few years ago you would hear about people being nasty to pilots and stewards/esses for flying while Arab. I don’t get at all because my experience with Qatar/Emirates/Etihad has been nothing but stellar. I feel safer flying with those airlines than most, to be honest. It’s both disgusting and laughable that people would have apprehension about “Arab” pilots. They’re fucking class airlines. Not sure if I’ve flown with Thai but probably have. I’ve flown with ThaiViet and that airline is exactly what you’d expect. Half janky, cheap.

I guess pilots didn’t have much power back then, cause in 2020 pilots can throw you off the plane. I used to Horse Assuming I’m Just An Old Lady Was Your First Shirt go there a lot too when I worked in Brixton. Surprised they don’t have anything acknowledging it in the pub – seems like an important piece of history to me. Yeah, it is quite a lot of fun! Plus you can win a £30 bar tab, and there is a cash prize that rolls over if no one wins it. Umm not that long ago? It is happening today and never really stopped. Chanting racist BS during Premiership matches is getting more common. We’ve managed to normalize racism under the thin veil of immigration problems. The rise of the far-right is happening in the UK, US and all across Europe.
